Perjalanan Garudafood berawal dari PT Tudung, didirikan di Pati, Jawa Tengah, pada 1958 dan bergerak di bisnis tepung tapioka. Pada 1979, PT Tudung berganti nama menjadi PT Tudung Putrajaya (TPJ). Pendiri perusahaan adalah mendiang Darmo Putro, mantan pejuang yang memilih menekuni dunia usaha setelah bangsa Indonesia merdeka.
Pada awal 1987, TPJ mulai menjual hasil produksi kacangnya dengan merk Kacang Garing Garuda, yang belakangan dikenal dengan sebutan ringkas: Kacang Garuda.
